What runs in Svalbard, month by month
The single most useful thing to know before booking anything here: roughly half the archipelago's tours are not operating in whatever month you are looking at. Find your month, then choose.

Short answer
March and April are the strongest all-round months: deep snow, returning daylight, and snowmobiles, ice caves and the last aurora all running at once. June to August gives you boats, hiking, wildlife and the midnight sun but no aurora and no snowmobiles. November to January is the polar night, when the aurora can appear at midday but the outdoor programme narrows sharply.

Which category should you book?
If you have one activity slot and want the highest chance of a good day regardless of month, the pattern from the listings themselves is fairly clear.

The reason "book first" matters: Svalbard cancels for weather, and if your priority trip is on your last day there is no second attempt.

What is the best month to visit Svalbard?
March, if you want the most choice. Deep snow, daylight returning fast, and snowmobiles, ice caves and snowshoe hikes all running at once. July if you want the boats to Pyramiden and Barentsburg, the bird cliffs and the midnight sun. December or January if the polar night and daytime aurora are the reason you are coming. There genuinely is no single answer, because these are four different holidays.
Can I see the northern lights and go snowmobiling on the same trip?
Yes, but only in a narrow window. Aurora season ends around mid-February and the snowmobile season gets properly going in late January, so late January and the first half of February is where the two overlap. March has better snow but the aurora is largely gone. If you want both, aim for early February and accept slightly less daylight.
Is there anything to do in Svalbard in May?
Less than either side of it. May is the transition month: the snow is going so the snowmobiles stop around mid-month, the ice caves have closed, and the fjord has not always cleared enough for the boats to start. Town, mine and Seed Vault tours run throughout, and hiking becomes possible late in the month. If you can move your dates by two weeks in either direction, do.
When is the cheapest time to visit Svalbard?
October and early November, which is also the quietest and the month with the least on offer. The tours themselves do not discount much by season, since the from-prices are similar year-round, but flights and accommodation are noticeably softer outside the March to April and June to August peaks. Late September is the sweet spot if you want low season without losing the boats.
How many days do I need to fit in the tours I want?
Three full days for two activities, four if you want three. Tours run once a day, most take half a day or more, and Svalbard cancels for weather often enough that spare capacity is not optional. Booking two activities into two days and flying out on the third is how people end up doing neither.
