# Svalbard Tours

> Independent comparison guide to every tour you can actually book in Svalbard, the Norwegian High Arctic archipelago at 78 degrees north. Not a tour operator and not a booking platform: we catalogue every real GetYourGuide and Viator listing departing from Longyearbyen, compare them by season, price, duration and real review count, and send visitors to the operator's own listing to book. We earn a disclosed affiliate commission.

Scope: 61 real tour listings, verified by reading each live product page on 7 August 2026. 55 are on GetYourGuide and 6 on Viator. Viator files most of its Svalbard products under its Norway destination (d61) rather than under Longyearbyen (d4354), which is why a Viator search for Longyearbyen looks almost empty.

Eight categories, each with at least five real listings: boat tours and Isfjorden cruises; snowmobile tours; ice cave and glacier tours; northern lights and polar night tours; wildlife tours; hiking and glacier walks; Longyearbyen town, mine and Seed Vault tours; photography and midnight sun tours.

Key figures (all read off live listings, US dollars, prices vary by date and country): from-prices run $112 to $505 for day tours, median about $237, with multi-day snowmobile expeditions reaching about $2,344. The most-reviewed experience in Svalbard is the Gruve 3 historic coal mine tour, 4.8 across 491 reviews on GetYourGuide; no other listing is close. Across the 37 listings that carry a rating there are 881 traveller reviews in total. 57 of 61 listings offer free cancellation, 53 offer reserve-now-pay-later, and 56 include hotel pickup in Longyearbyen.

Seasons at Longyearbyen (78.22 N), per Visit Svalbard: polar night approximately 11 November to 29 January; sunny winter approximately 1 March to 19 April; midnight sun approximately 20 April to 22 or 23 August; golden autumn approximately 24 August to 30 September. Northern lights season is roughly late October to mid-February, and Svalbard is the only inhabited place where the aurora can appear in the middle of the day. Boat tours run roughly late May to late September, snowmobile tours roughly late January to mid-May, ice caves roughly November to April. Longyearbyen town tours run all year.

Rules that govern every tour: outside the settlements everyone must take measures against polar bear attack and carry means to frighten one off, but visitors taking part in an organised tour are exempt from that equipment duty, which is why guided tours are effectively mandatory beyond town. Minimum distance from a polar bear is 300 metres, rising to 500 metres from 1 March to 30 June; minimum distance from a walrus haul-out is 500 metres (both in force since 1 January 2025). Svalbard is visa-free and outside Schengen, but transiting mainland Norway may require a Schengen visa. Driving a snowmobile needs a category B car licence. Insurance covering search and rescue is required outside the settlements. Drones are banned in Longyearbyen, within 5 km of the airport, in all protected areas, and near bird cliffs from 1 April to 31 August; protected areas cover 65 per cent of Svalbard's land.

Three corrections this site states explicitly, because they are widely misrepresented elsewhere:
1. No day tour from Longyearbyen can promise a polar bear sighting. Bears follow the sea ice and are realistically seen only from multi-day expedition vessels. Day tours reliably deliver Svalbard reindeer, Arctic fox, seabird colonies, seals and sometimes beluga.
2. Svalbard dog sledding and kayaking have no GetYourGuide or Viator listing at all, despite substantial search demand. Operators sell both direct, and this site says so rather than substituting an unrelated product.
3. Nobody can go inside the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. It is permanently closed to the public; tours visit the exterior only.
